2022-07-08

Recently, the research team of Prof. Lei Guanghua and Prof. Zeng Chao from the Department of Orthopaedics/National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Disorders published an online original article, an important clinic research article about reasons and risk factors for readmission following knee arthroplasty (KA) in China titled Incidence, patterns and risk factors for readmission following knee arthroplasty in China: a national retrospective cohort study in International Journal of Surgery. Doctoral student Long Huizhong and physician Xie Dongxing from the Department of Orthopaedics/Hunan Key Laboratory of Joint Degeneration and Injury are the co-first authors. Prof. Lei Guanghua and Prof. Zeng Chao are the co-corresponding authors. Xiangya Hospital, Central South University is the first affiliation and the only corresponding affiliation. The study is supported by the research team led by Director Wang Haibo from China Standard Medical Information Research Center, First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University.

Artificial knee arthroplasty (KA) can effectively reduce pain symptoms in patients with severe osteoarthritis and significantly improves joint function and quality of life. Short-term readmission is an important adverse event following knee arthroplasty, which can lead to increased economic burden on patients and waste of social healthcare resources, and is an important indicator to evaluate the quality of healthcare. In recent years, with the increasing aging of our population, the prevalence of osteoarthritis of the knee has been increasing, followed by the increased volume of KA surgery, but there is a great lack of research related to readmission following KA surgery in China. This research first revealed the overall current situation of readmission after KA in 31 province-level administrative regions, and systematically studied the reasons for and risk factors for readmission following KA, providing theoretical basis and reference for the continuing improvement of the quality of care of artificial KA and for the policy making of healthcare.

Over the years, Prof. Lei Guanghua and his team have been dedicated to clinical and translational research on the pathogenesis, clinical prevention and treatment of osteoarticular diseases.
